What is NAPSA?
The National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies is a nonprofit, national association of professionals who
are involved or interested in the areas of pretrial release and pretrial
diversion within the broader field of criminal justice.
Since 1973, NAPSA has served as a national forum for ideas and
issues, with emphasis on the establishment of agencies to provide
pretrial services to the courts, research to support and improve
services, promotion of professional competence through the development
of professional standards and education, and encouragement of
responsibility among member agencies.
What is the Annual
Conference and Training
Institute?
The Conference is held in October of each year to provide an opportunity
for criminal justice professionals to meet, to network, and to learn
about the work of other pretrial services programs across the nation.
It also provides an opportunity to present the philosophical
underpinnings of the field to selected employees, many of whom will
become pretrial services managers and administrators. A
significant part of the experience for all attendees is the involvement
of exhibitors who understand the field and its needs.
Who attends?
The Conference attracts practitioners from local, state, and
federal government agencies and from nonprofit organizations engaged in
delivering pretrial services. Although some work directly within a
pretrial services agency, many attendees work within probation or
community corrections departments, or within law enforcement agencies.
Every year the Conference also attracts judges and other officials who
are responsible for setting policy. Generally, approximately 45%
of attendees are managers or administrators, and nearly 50% of attendees
are line employees.
Who exhibits?
Past conference exhibitors most often included manufacturers and distributors of supervision technologies related to electronic
monitoring, ignition interlock, drug screening, and case management.
At this and future conferences, NAPSA is seeking to broaden the range of
exhibitors to help NAPSA members better focus their resources and
improve effectiveness.
